
Heidi Erdmann was born and grew up in Swakopmund, Namibia. Graduated from the University of Stellenbosch in 1987 with a BA Degree, majoring in Psychology.
She curated her first exhibition in 1993. A multi-media group exhibition featuring the work of 33 South African artists amongst them, Brett Murray, Barend de Wet, Kate Gottgens and Elizabeth Gunter. In 1994 she joined the South African National Gallery in Cape Town as the assistant to the Director.
Erdmann was appointed the curator of AREA Gallery in 1997. This Cape Town based gallery was dedicated to photography, and hosted several acclaimed national and international exhibitions. While under Erdmann’s management, AREA Gallery received a BASA nomination.
In 1999 Erdmann was invited to the Centro de la Imagen in Mexico City, Mexico to present a workshop on African and South African photography.
Since opening her own gallery in 2001 Erdmann has curated numerous successful exhibitions both locally and abroad. Most recently she co-curated, along with Jacob Lebeko (UNISA Art Gallery assistant curator) the successful travelling museum exhibition, Construct: beyond the documentary photograph. Erdmann and Lebeko are currently working on their second exhibition which will focus on comic art in Africa.
