Nomusa Makhubu
born 1984, lives and works in Grahamstown
Identity, culture, land, rights, economy and religion are continuously explored by Makhubu. She is not afraid to explore South Africa’s dark and murky history. In the Self Portrait Project series, Nomusa projected images of herself onto historically sensitive material to explore issues of self-representation and identity. Identity is a theme which Makhubu continually revisits and uses to challenge notions of representation, particularly in a colonial context.
Makhubu is already an award winning artist, she received the Gerard Sekoto Award in 2007.
